This promises to be a memorable event as we remind ourselves what a great contribution Sherlock Holmes has made to the cinema. From the early silent films and the stage efforts by those such as William Gillette, who set up so much of the style and look of Holmes which translated to the silver screen...
... To the pioneering work by Eille Norwood, who was a master of stage and screen disguises and set a serious tone to the cinema, which had made joking references to Sherlock Holmes in early silent films.
And the valiant works done by Rathbone and Bruce, both on the radio and, further on, into the medium of film.
Both Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce brought the public to a new awareness of Sherlock Holmes and sent people back to the reading room to catch up on the genre and familiarize themselves with the stories again.
Peter Cushing, too, had his moment of glory when he created his version of Holmes for what some say is the best depiction of "The Hound of the Baskervilles" ever set to film.
During the war years, Rathbone and Bruce were to appear in several Sherlock Holmes films which gave hope and courage to those both in America and England who were suffering from the war.
Later, others took up the reins and Holmes and Watson were to see new life on screen as actors like Christopher Plummer and Brett lent their style and wit to Holmes, both in film and in the new medium, television.
